COVID-19 in Children in the United States: Intensive Care Admissions, Estimated Total Infected, and Projected Numbers of Severe Pediatric Cases in 2020

Empirical case projection study to provide evidence-based estimate of children with COVID-19 that might be severely or critically affected by the disease requiring hospitalization during the pandemic in the United States. Because there are 74 million children 0 to 17 years old in the United States, the projected numbers of severe cases could overextend available pediatric hospital care resources under several moderate cumulative pediatric infection proportion scenarios for 2020 despite lower severity of COVID-19 in children than in adults.
