Vertical transmission of COVID-19: SARS-CoV-2 RNA on the fetal side of the placenta in pregnancies with COVID-19 positive mothers and neonates at birth

From 22 neonates born from affected women by COVID-19 infection in an Italian hospital, 2 neonates tested positive by PCR and nasopharyngeal swab. These two cases are described.

The authors find SARS-CoV-2 RNA in mother, neonate and the fetal side of the placenta in the two cases. These findings might support the possibility of vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from the mother to the baby in utero.
