Vertical transmission and materno-fetal outcomes in 13 patients with COVID-19

Retrospective case-series of 13 pregnant patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 during the third trimester of pregnancy admitted for delivery to a university hospital in Lausanne. Eleven of 13 (84%) patients had a vaginal delivery and two had a C-Section. Within minutes of placental expulsion, the fetal surface of the placenta was disinfected, incised with a sterile scalpel and two swabs (close to the umbilical cord and peripheral margin) were obtained and tested for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR. None of the placenta, cord blood nor neonate nasopharyngeal swabs were positive for SARS-CoV-2.
