Vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection and preterm birth

Case report of a SARS-CoV-2-positive woman giving preterm birth (24 weeks of gestation) to two fetuses with SARS-CoV-2 positive testing in placental tissue and amniotic fluid. The presence of the virus was not evaluated in samples or tissue of the fetuses. The placental histological examinations showed chronic intervillositis and extensive intervillous fibrin depositions with ischemic necrosis of the surrounding villi. The authors conclude that these findings support the possibility of vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and miscarriage due to the infection cannot be ruled out.
